President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ghana Armed Forces to immediately suspend the ongoing recruitment screening exercise in Accra following the tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium that claimed the lives of six young women.
According to reports, the unfortunate incident occurred during a massive turnout of applicants at the stadium, resulting in overcrowding and chaos. The President expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, describing the tragedy as a painful reminder of the need for improved safety measures during national recruitment exercises.
“I have asked the military to put the Accra screening on hold and make new arrangements,” President Mahama stated. “It is heartbreaking to learn that all six potential recruits who died in the El-Wak Stadium stampede were female.”
The President extended his condolences to the bereaved families and assured the public that the government, in collaboration with the military high command, will review the recruitment process to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Authorities are expected to announce a new date and venue after proper safety arrangements are made.
