Ghanaian transgender artiste Angel Maxine has called on members of the LGBTQ+ community to remain calm following Parliament’s approval of a new anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
Reacting to the development, Angel Maxine argued that the legislation has not yet become law and urged LGBTQ+ persons not to panic over its passage in Parliament.
According to her, the bill is more political than practical and does not pose an immediate threat to members of the community.
“The Ghanaian anti-LGBTQ+ bill has been passed today in Parliament. As we continue to fight it, please do not panic. Do not be afraid. Nobody can do anything to you. It’s the politicians sitting in Parliament who are fooling themselves,” she said.
The outspoken artiste further noted that the legislative process is not yet complete, emphasizing that the bill still requires presidential assent before it can become law.
Expressing confidence in President John Dramani Mahama, Angel Maxine stated that she does not believe he will approve the bill.
“This is just the bill that they have passed. The President has not signed it, and the President will not sign it. The President is not foolish. He will not sign this foolish bill. So don’t be afraid,” she added.
Her comments come after Ghana’s Parliament passed the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill on May 29, 2026. The legislation has continued to generate debate among political leaders, civil society groups, religious organizations, and human rights advocates.
While supporters of the bill argue that it reflects Ghanaian cultural and moral values, critics maintain that it could undermine the rights and freedoms of LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies.
As discussions continue, attention is expected to shift to the presidency, where the fate of the bill will ultimately depend on whether it receives presidential assent.
